The Barbuta is the Italian variant of the late medieval Bascinet. Its shape is reminiscent of the shapes of ancient helmets, such as the Corinthian helmet. It can be seen that also in the art of the plates, the change from the late Gothic to the Renaissance began in Italy. The bascinet, also known as a bascinet, bassinet, basnet, or kettle bonnet, evolved from the simpler brain bonnet in the early 14th century and was typically often worn with chain mail.
