WHO WAS WILLIAM WALLACE?

Edward I of England occupied the kingdom of Scotland, as the Scottish barons refused to support him in his war against France. Scotland came to be run by English officials, so it became a country subject to the King of England. In this context, a man appeared, William Wallace, who led the rebellion against the English.

It was then that William Wallace entered the scene, leading the resistance against foreign rule. William, being second son, was destined to serve the Church, and in his apprenticeship he read the classics, which gave birth to an honest value of freedom, an ideal that he applied in his fight to recover Scotland for the Scots. In this contest Wallace stormed Lanark and killed its sheriff, as he had executed Marion Braidfute , Wallace's fiancée or young wife. After this he created an army of peasants who had several victories against the occupying army. Wallace and another Scottish leader, Andrew de Moray joined their troops and at Stirling inflicted a major defeat on the English. It is believed that 5,000 fighters on the English side were killed. Nothing is known about the Scottish side, the only thing certain is that Moray would lose his life in the battle. Wallace was promoted to knight and Warden of Scotland.

However, his luck would not last long. In 1298, Wallace established himself with his army near Falkirk, to await the English troops personally commanded by King Edward. The Scots suffered a heavy defeat, a few of them being able to escape, including Wallace himself. After this battle, most of the nobles made peace with Eduardo. Wallace waged guerrilla warfare and traveled abroad to seek help to no avail. He then returned to Scotland to continue fighting with the elements at his disposal. In 1304 Wallace's troops were destroyed, and he ended up on his own as a fugitive. But he was betrayed and taken prisoner. Transferred to London, he was tried and sentenced to die. Executed in a heinous way, his body was dismembered. Despite his fight for the freedom of Scotland, there was no reaction from his compatriots, nor any revolt from the people. But later he was recognized as a national hero. His story inspired the film Braveheart (1995), starring Mel Gibson and achieved success, winning several Oscars.

WHAT WAS THE SWORD OF WILLIAM WALLACE CALLED?

The name Claymore is thought to come from the Gaelic meaning big sword, although it could also mean two-handed sword. It was used constantly in the wars between the English and the Scots between the years 1330 and 1700. It was somewhat smaller than other swords of the time, which made it lighter and more manageable.

Baveheart 's sword is called the Scottish ' Claymore ' and it is the largest sword we can find. It measures more than 1.40 meters and is used using both hands . It was worn by the Scots between the 15th and 17th centuries. It is said that William Wallace himself, known as Braveheart , used it in his war against the English.

Claymore sword is designed to be used with two hands, like the greatsword or greatsword. It has a double edge, an oversized handle and a hawk that allowed defending itself in the absence of a shield. Its greatest virtue was precisely this, to block the opponent's blows, the hilt being its main feature.

WHERE IS THE SWORD OF WILIAM WALLACE FOUND?

Only his attributed sword is kept from William Wallace . In Stirling, in the National Wallace Monument , this sword can be seen, since 1888, inside a glass case.

HOW LONG IS WILLIAM WALLACE'S CLAYMORE SWORD?

Normal Claymores are 1.40m tall and weigh around 2.5kg. The largest sword of this model measures 2.24 meters and weighs 10 kilos.

It also had advantages in disarming opponents due to its cross guard design. It used to be 1.5 meters tall, with a 30 centimeter grip and 2.5 kilos in weight. It had a round pommel and a guard with straight arms leaning forward that ended in crosses.
