MEDIEVAL HELMETS

            The interest in protecting the head was born at the same time as the combats between the different peoples were generalized. They were known by the name of helmets. ^. Some left their faces uncovered, although the helmet with cheekpieces and nose protector was progressively imposed. The Macedonians do not have nose protection, although they do have cheek pieces. The Roman legions used helmets similar to the Macedonians, but of poorer quality, being mass-produced by the Roman state. With the Roman cavalry the helmet with nose protection returns.

            The cavalry helmet Medieval was originally a Roman cavalry helmet to which nasal protection was added. This type of helmet, which was not very effective in protecting the soldier, was useful from a psychological point of view, producing fear in the opponent (Ernest's helmet). In America, the Aztecs who used wooden helmets produced the same mood in the adversary.

            In the East, face protection is not widely used. On the contrary, in the West the helmet becomes more compact, in one piece. This increased protection, but had a major flaw, as it greatly reduced visibility.             -Bacinete. - XIV century. Hemispherical to later be pointed. It covered ears and neck.

            -Barbuta. - Early 15th century. Italian bacinete advance and had a T- or Y-shaped face opening.

            -Ambush. - Early 15th century. Very used. It replaced the bacinete and was adopted to attach a visor.

            -Almete. - Early 15th century. It replaced the trap. It could be opened on the sides.

            -Frog mouth. - Early 15th century. Visorless helmet widely used in tournaments.

            -Helm closed. End of the fifteenth century. It had a visor and differs from the cap because it can be opened upwards.

            -Mambrino 's helmet , which was the barber's basin used by Don Quixote.

            - The helmet of the Head of the Dragon of the North, a helmet typical of the works of JRR Tolkien .

            - The morion widely used in Castile in the 16th century. Its shape was reminiscent of a cone and it had a crest on top that could be used as a wounding element.
