A origem das armas de fogo está provavelmente na China, após a invenção da pólvora no século IX . Os primeiros dispositivos consistiam em tubos de bambu utilizados para lançar pedras através da explosão de pólvora.

<h2>Armas de fogo do século XVI</h2>

No século XVI surge o mosquete, uma das primeiras armas de fogo de grande importância nos exércitos europeus. Era extremamente pesado e complicado de recarregar, pois o rastilho e a bala tinham de ser inseridos manualmente no cano. Devido à duração do processo de recarga, após dispararem o primeiro tiro, os soldados utilizavam frequentemente a espada para se defenderem enquanto recarregavam.

Durante o século XVII, a espingarda substituiu o mosquete graças ao seu maior alcance e à sua melhor precisão forte>. Embora a pólvora e as balas ainda tivessem de ser transportadas numa mochila, um soldado experiente podia disparar entre duas e três vezes por minuto.
