The size and curvature correspond to Roman shields from around AD 40-200. The shield finial (umbo) and valance are tinned brass, very similar to the original tinned bronze fittings. Only the fixing of the shield socket, for practical reasons, is carried out with screws and round threaded caps. The back of the shield is reinforced with wooden slats.
