The trajectory of the bullets was very imprecise and during combat it was almost impossible to aim well. The only way to ensure any effectiveness was by massing a high density of rifles in a small front and firing as tight volleys as possible at the shortest distance allowed. Even so, on many occasions the combatants after firing were forced to use the bayonet.
