So-called "big helmets" were often worn over a smaller, lighter helmet (for example, skullcaps). They were widespread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Numerous contemporary illustrations (miniatures) and finds from Germany, Flanders, England, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, etc. demonstrate the popularity of this type of helmet. These helmets were used in the battles of Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356), among others.
