The Sutton Hoo archaeological site in East Anglia, England, includes numerous burial mounds, including the famous ship burial from which valuable and well-preserved artifacts dating back to the 7th century were recovered in 1939. The best-known finds from this tomb are probably the Great Gold Buckle and the Sutton Hoo helmet, both important testimonies of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship. The ceremonial helmet is believed to have been a funerary item for an Anglo-Saxon prince and was probably made in the early 7th century. Historically it is close to other early medieval Germanic helmets such as those of Vendel and Valsgärde (Sweden).
