Gjermundbu Helmet With Riveted Aventail
The Gjermundbu helmet with riveted aventail, 2mm steel functional and ready for battle. Material: 2mm steel - Padded fabric lining and cowhide chin straps. Antique finish and weight approx. 2.9kg
The Gjermundbu helmet was discovered in 1943 during excavations of a Viking burial mound. It has been expertly reconstructed and is currently on display at the Museum of National Antiquities (Oldsaksamlinga) in Oslo. The helmet is dated to AD 970. It is a typical example of a Viking show helmet, offering the wearer good facial protection while maintaining a sufficient field of vision. But the helm shape and spangens also show a relationship to Norse crested helmets.
