Medieval wooden bows were weapons used to shoot arrows over great distances and precision. Bows were composed of a string, usually made of animal hair or plants, and an arched base of wood, often made of ash1. The bows could be of different types, depending on their shape, size and power. Some of the best known are:

Longbow or longbow: It was a simple bow, made of a single piece of wood, that measured between 1.5 and 2 meters in length. It was the bow most used by the English in medieval wars, especially in the Hundred Years' War against France. It had a range of about 200 meters and could pierce knights' armor.

Composite bow: It was a bow made up of several layers of wood, antler and tendons, joined with glue and strips of leather or bark. It was the bow most used by the Mongols, Turks and Arabs. It had greater power than the longbow and could shoot arrows about 300 meters away.

Recurve bow: It was a bow that had the tips curved outward, which gave more tension and speed to the arrow. It was the bow most used by the Huns, Persians and Romans. It had a similar range to the compound bow, but was easier to handle and transport.

Medieval wooden bows were used for both hunting and warfare. Archers often carried a quiver of arrows on their back or belt. The arrows had a wooden base and a stone, bone or metal tip. Some arrows had feather stabilizers on the back to improve their flight. Arrows could have different shapes and sizes depending on the type of bow and the target.

Medieval wooden bows were very effective and influential weapons in history. Some famous battles where bows played a decisive role were:

The Battle of Hastings (1066): William the Conqueror's Normans defeated Harold II's Anglo-Saxons thanks to the massive use of longbows.

The Battle of Agincourt (1415): The English of Henry V defeated the French of Charles VI with numerical inferiority thanks to the use of long bows that decimated the French cavalry.

The Battle of Ain Jalut (1260): The Egyptian Mamluks stopped the Mongol advance in the Middle East thanks to the use of composite bows that surpassed the Mongol bows.
