An old legend says that a Nordic smith named Ulfberht made the first steel blade. This crucial development achieved an almost mythical status among the warriors, becoming one of the most important swords for the study of medieval weapons. Several of these leaves of different periods of time are conserved, some with engravings in gratitude and reverence to the sanctified name of Ulfberht.
Before the Ulfberht swords, all European swords were of the welded design variety. Soft iron bars were welded together with steel strips, forged to the shape of the blade, and then the steel blade was welded to the sword. But, Ulfberht´s sword was a quantum leap in both technology and design. It was not made of strip, but of good carbon steel blades with enough carbon content to produce excellent swords
